Shahid Kapoor’s ‘Udta Punjab’ faces plagiarism allegations

Abhishek Chaubeys directorial ‘Udta Punjab‘ is once again embroiled in a controversy. Months after its release the movie has been hit by plagiarism allegations. A media report has stated that ‘High Society’ a novel by Ben Elton is a possible inspiration for the film.

A shocked Anurag Kashyap who had fought a long and hard battle with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) said, “I don’t have anything to say. I am completely shocked by the same, haven’t read the book. I know for a fact that my director and writer went and spent a lot of time in Punjab researching the film, and have seen the research. If they were in any way inspired by the book, which only they know, they have done a damn good job in the writing of the script. Because the film that I read and I saw, seemed very very rooted in the land.”

The writer of the movie admitted that he has read the book but it was Steven Soderbergh’s ‘Traffic’ and a Tehelka article that inspired him to write the story.

‘High Society’, a 2002 novel by Ben Elton shares some striking similarities between certain characters, situations, plot points and devices used in the novel and consequently in the film as well.

Looks like troubles are still chasing ‘Udta Punjab’ that was all about the rising cases of Drug Abuse in the state.
