Zoya Akhtar’s next ‘Gully Boy’ that was originally planned with Ranveer Singh in the lead will now have Varun Dhawan in it instead of Ranveer. Apparently, Ranveer has chosen to opt out of the film as the dates were clashing with Shimit Amin’s next. So, the makers of ‘Gully Boy’ have roped in Varun Dhawan to play the role of a street rapper from a Mumbai chawl who rises to fame eventually.
As of now, Ranveer is busy prepping up for his role in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s period drama ‘Padmavati’, after which he will start with Shimit’s untitled next and then with Rohit Shetty’s movie in 2018.
Ranveer and Zoya became good friends while filming ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ and both were pretty keen to work again, but it just did not work out. Reveals a source close a web portal, “Ranveer loved the subject, but finally had to let go. He tried his best to work out the dates for Zoya’s film for the last three months, but Amin’s romantic drama produced by YRF, begins shooting next year and is a romantic drama. The female lead of the film is a newcomer. Ranveer’s first loyalty is with YRF, hence when it was obvious he had to choose between Zoya and Shimit, he opted for his mentor Aditya Chopra’s production. Varun has liked Zoya’s story and is trying to work out his dates for the film, which starts next year.”
Rumours suggest that Zoya’s ‘Gully Boy’ is based on the real life story of two rappers Divine (Vivian Fernandes) and Naezy (Naved Sheikh) and their success story.
